Elwood Edwards

Editor/Voice of AOL

(1949–2024)

"Welcome. You've Got Mail"

Elwood Edwards was more than a legendary voice; he was a cultural touchstone whose work shaped the way a generation first experienced the internet. Best known as the voice behind AOL’s iconic greetings, "Welcome" and “You’ve got mail,” Elwood brought warmth, excitement, and human connection to the earliest days of digital communication. For millions, his voice was the sound of possibility.

Beyond his role as the “Voice of AOL,” Elwood built a rich career as a voice actor and broadcaster, lending his talent to television, radio, and countless projects across the media landscape. His work was always defined by his unique ability to make technology feel personal and welcoming.

Elwood joined the Cleveland 13 Advisory Board in the network's early days, when our newsroom was still taking shape. He shared not just his expertise, but also his generosity, wit, and passion for innovation. His insights helped guide our mission to tell stories that matter, and his presence reminded us that technology is at its best when it brings people together.

Elwood passed away in 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will echo for generations. In his honor, Cleveland 13 News will maintain his biography permanently on our website, ensuring his contributions to media, technology, and community remain part of our story.

Cleveland 13 is also in the process of establishing the Elwood Edwards Legacy Award, recognizing voices (literal or figurative) that change how people connect.

His voice will never fade from our memory. His impact will never fade from our city.
