Decades to Leave the Flats, Plans Move to New Location

CLEVELAND, OHIO — Decades is preparing to leave its current location in Cleveland's Flats following an ongoing dispute with the building's management, according to owner Bryan Dall. Dall confirmed that the business has decided not to reopen at its current location and is now working toward securing a new space. While a potential location has been identified, he said the business will wait until an agreement is finalized before making an official announcement. "It looks like we have a new location, but we will announce for sure when we do," Dall said. The decision follows several weeks of uncertainty surrounding the business. Decades had previously planned to reopen after restrictions were placed on the venue, including a requirement that two sheriff's deputies be stationed at the entrance. According to Dall, the business arranged for the deputies and informed building management that the requirement had been met. He said the deputies later canceled and told the business they could not work the event. Decades returned to court on the day it was scheduled to reopen. Dall said the building attempted to prevent the reopening because the required security was no longer available, despite the cancellation being outside the business's control. "At that point, the whole thing was just ridiculous, and it was clear we were not wanted no matter what we did," Dall said. "We just felt it was best to agree to disagree with the building and go our separate ways." The dispute began following a fight connected to the venue. Dall acknowledged that the altercation occurred but said the business has never experienced a weapons-related incident in or around the bar. He also disputed allegations that Decades had violated fire and safety requirements. Dall said he has three fire department reports related to the property, including a June 13 report indicating the business passed its inspection. A second report from June 21 found the venue was at capacity but not over capacity, according to Dall. He also said video showed the rear exit was unobstructed. Dall said another concern involved two 50-ounce drums located in a common hallway. He claimed the drums did not belong to Decades and were later identified as property belonging to the building that contained water softener. Building management also accused the business of breaching its lease, allegations Dall denies. He said Decades remained current on its rent throughout the dispute. Another point of disagreement involved the business's use of event promoters. Dall said the lease prohibited subleasing the unit but did not specifically prohibit working with promoters. He maintained that hiring promoters and subleasing a property are not legally the same. Dall believes the relationship between Decades and the building had deteriorated beyond repair and said leaving the property became the most practical decision for the business. "All in all, they just wanted us out and have for a long time," he said. "So we decided we'd be best out of the Flats elsewhere." Although Decades will not reopen at its former location, the business does not appear to be closing permanently. Dall said customers will be updated once a lease for the new location has been finalized.
