Do Weighted Blankets Actually Help You Sleep? | Viral vs. Verified

On this episode of Viral vs. Verified, I'm talking about weighted blankets. Social media is full of people claiming that sleeping under a heavy blanket can calm your nervous system, reduce anxiety and help you sleep better. Some people absolutely swear by them. So is this viral or verified? The theory is that the pressure from a weighted blanket provides something called deep-pressure stimulation. That pressure may create a calming sensory effect and potentially reduce arousal, which could make it easier for some people to relax. There actually is some research supporting the idea. In a randomized controlled trial involving adults with insomnia, people using weighted blankets reported greater improvements in sleep quality than people using normal blankets. Other studies have also suggested potential benefits for anxiety and insomnia, particularly in certain adult populations. Here's where we need some perspective. The research is still relatively limited. Many of the studies are small, some involve people with psychiatric or sleep disorders, and the objective measurements of sleep do not always improve as much as people's subjective reports. In other words, people may feel like they sleep better under a weighted blanket, and that matters, but we cannot say that weighted blankets dramatically improve sleep for everyone. They certainly do not replace good sleep habits or proper treatment for chronic insomnia. So what's the verdict? Can a weighted blanket help some people feel calmer and potentially sleep better? VERIFIED. But the idea that a heavy blanket is a proven solution for insomnia for everyone? That's VIRAL, not verified. If you like the feeling of one and it helps you relax, there is nothing wrong with using it. Just do not confuse a useful sleep tool with a cure. ----------- I'm Dr. Fred Peters, and this is Viral vs. Verified, where we separate what's trending from what the science actually shows. -------------------- At Cleveland 13 News, we strive to provide accurate, up-to-date, and reliable reporting.
