CLEVELAND, OH – Janice Lawrence Braxton, Olympic gold medalist and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, will mentor Team Cleveland, an all-girls youth basketball league, during their practice session this Thursday, May 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Cudell Recreation Center.
"When legends like Janice Lawrence Braxton invest their time in our youth, they're not just teaching basketball...they're building the next generation of leaders," said Rosetta "Rose" Daniels, Founder and Executive Director of Exciting Ministries.
Braxton's visit is part of Exciting Ministries' broader initiative to combat bullying and prevent youth suicide in Cleveland. According to the Ohio Department of Health, suicide is now the second leading cause of death among children and young adults in the state .
During Thursday's practice, Braxton will observe drills, provide skills development pointers, and share insights from her illustrious career. Her achievements include:
Olympic Gold Medalist with Team USA in 1984
Two-time national champion with Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters
NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 1982
Two-time Kodak All-American (1983, 1984)
WNBA player and assistant coach with the Cleveland Rockers
Inductee of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (2006)
"The opportunity for these young women to learn from someone of Janice's caliber is invaluable," Daniels added. "Her story of excellence despite obstacles provides a powerful example that success is possible with determination and the right support system—exactly what our 'Winning The Game' campaign is all about."
Braxton's mentorship session serves as a precursor to her participation in the "Winning The Game" Youth Charity Basketball Outreach event on July 26 at Case Western Reserve University's Veale Athletic Center. The event will feature a pro ball panel, skills clinics, exhibition games, and live youth entertainment, aiming to empower Cleveland's youth through mentorship and community engagement.
