UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH — Bialy’s Bagels, the long-standing University Heights institution known for its traditional New York-style bagels, announced it is closing temporarily following a facility accident. The shop, located on Warrensville Center Road, will not be serving its usual crowds on Wednesday, Feb. 11, due to a gas line failure.
According to a video statement released by the owners on the Bialy’s Bagels Facebook page, the issue began when an awning from an adjacent business fell. The collapse did not just cause a mess: It directly struck and damaged the bakery’s gas lines.
For safety reasons, the gas had to be shut off immediately. This made it impossible for the staff to operate the heavy ovens required for daily production.
The owners stated they will definitely be closed Wednesday and warned the closure could extend into Thursday, Feb. 12, depending on how quickly repairs are completed. This location has been a fixture in the community since 1966, and the sudden news prompted a wave of reactions from loyal patrons on social media.
One local customer expressed relief that no one was standing under the awning when it gave way. Another Clevelander questioned the property’s overall maintenance standards. Responding to concerns about the financial hit of a sudden closure, the owners confirmed they have business interruption insurance to help manage the loss of revenue.
For many in the area, the concern was more about when they could get their next bagel. One regular customer simply noted the situation was a "bummer," reflecting the sentiment of many who rely on the shop for their morning routine. Updates on the repair progress and an official reopening date will be posted to the shop’s social media accounts and its website.
