WCTU CLEVELAND 13 — Northeast Ohio's Bigfoot fascination is getting a local spotlight as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers prepare to become the Grassmen for one night June 11, blending baseball, regional folklore and the continuing search for Ohio's legendary creature. The Grassman, often described as Ohio's version of Bigfoot, has become part of a wider local push tied to recent reports of unusual sightings and a search that produced a large footprint but no DNA. Supporters of the effort have included Beer Belly and Jelly in Northfield and Bigfoot Landscaping in Oakwood Village. The latest weird news roundup also featured a Westerville family that set a world record when a plastic Slinky descended 53 stadium steps at Otterbein University. The Ohio college also has ties to actor Gordon Jump and songwriter Benjamin Russell Hanby, who wrote "Up on the Housetop" and "Jolly Old St. Nicholas." In North Royalton, residents were warned about a helicopter carrying spinning saw blades to trim trees near power lines, creating one of the more alarming local images of the week. Other unusual stories stretched across the globe. A 97-year-old man celebrated his birthday by flying in zero gravity. A London Marathon runner set a record by knitting an 18-foot, 3-inch scarf during the race. European salons are donating hair clippings to be turned into mulch meant to repel deer and fertilize plants. The roundup also included students in Maine who baked dirt for a school experiment, a Ferrari electric car with a reported $645,000 sticker price, a giant clown-like puppet found in Massachusetts, a paper cup collector in India and a company turning used chopsticks into furniture. Among the strangest real items were a banana synthesizer linked to Weird Al Yankovic and Japanese cookies made with dried digger wasps, proving once again that some of the oddest news does not need to be invented.
