Is Full-Fat Dairy Actually Healthier?

Published: Aug 13, 2026 - 1:22 p.m.

WCTU CLEVELAND 13 — For decades, consumers have been advised to choose low-fat or fat-free dairy to reduce saturated fat and protect heart health. However, new research is challenging whether the story is really that simple. A randomized controlled trial published in The Journal of Nutrition examined what happened when adults with overweight or obesity consumed three servings of full-fat dairy per day for 12 weeks. Despite the additional calories and saturated fat, researchers found no significant worsening in body weight, body fat, waist circumference, or fasting cholesterol. Does this mean full-fat dairy is healthier than low-fat dairy? No—and that is an important distinction. In this Cleveland 13 Health segment, the study's findings, its limitations, its dairy-industry funding, and why emerging research on the "food matrix" may change the way we think about saturated fat in foods such as cheese and yogurt are discussed. The takeaway: saturated fat still matters, particularly for LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk. Judging an entire food based solely on one nutrient may be an oversimplification. -------------------- At Cleveland 13 News, we strive to provide accurate, up-to-date, and reliable reporting.
