On the Tarmac with the Blue Angels and the Ohio Native Keeping Them Flying
CLEVELAND, OH — If you’ve spent any time near downtown Cleveland this weekend, you haven’t just heard the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, you’ve felt them rattling your chest. That deep, thundering roar vibrating off the lakefront and echoing between the downtown skyscrapers is the unmistakable soundtrack to Labor Day weekend on the North Coast. Over the next three days, hundreds of thousands of spectators will line the shores of Lake Erie and pack Burke Lakefront Airport with their eyes locked firmly on the sky, tracking the tight, razor-sharp formations of blue-and-gold F/A-18 Super Hornets. But while the crowds are looking up at the high-flying acrobatics, our Cleveland 13 team is looking straight ahead from ground level. All weekend long, we’re bringing you live, all-access coverage directly from the runways and tarmacs, taking you behind the security lines to reveal the intense preparation, mechanical precision, and human stories that make every single demonstration possible.
A huge part of that backstage access means getting up close and personal with the flight crews and pilots who turn raw horsepower into aerial ballet; and among them this weekend is a familiar Ohio face. Stationed right on the Burke flight line is Captain Jen Murr, a U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon and proud Buckeye native. Long before she was donning the iconic blue flight suit, Murr grew up in Jackson Center, a tight-knit Shelby County community of roughly 1,500 people. Her road to the flight line began right here in Ohio, where she graduated from Xavier University in 2002 before earning a Health Professions Scholarship to attend the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, receiving her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2006. Standing near the flight deck on the Burke tarmac, she couldn't hide her excitement about bringing the team back to her home state, taking time between pre-flight operations to shout out the friends and family who drove up to Cleveland to see her and the squadron in action. Having loved ones in the crowd to witness the precision of the team firsthand makes this stop along the lakefront especially meaningful.
While most people might picture a doctor working quietly inside a clinic, Captain Murr’s role with the Blue Angels is embedded right in the middle of the high-stakes operational action. As the squadron’s Flight Surgeon, she is a vital component of the team’s safety net. With demonstration pilots enduring crushing G-forces and executing maneuvers with mere inches of wingtip clearance, physiological readiness is just as critical as the fuel in the jets. When the jets taxi out and take off over Lake Erie, Murr isn’t waiting around in an office; she’s right on the airfield wearing a communications headset. She listens into the pilot feeds in real time, serving as a vital ground safety observer monitoring physical conditions, cockpit chatter, and flight safety tolerances to protect the men and women flying overhead.
That level of responsibility requires battle-tested experience, and Murr’s resume reads like an elite service record. Board-certified in Emergency Medicine and a former Chief Resident at SUNY Upstate Medical University, she has spent decades answering the call both in busy trauma bays and austere military environments. Her career includes deploying in support of Operation New Dawn across Bahrain and Qatar with VP-8, conducting rugged joint exercises in Wisconsin and Morocco with the Marine Corps’ 4th Medical Battalion, and serving alongside SEAL Team 18 as the Flight Surgeon for UAS-18 under Naval Special Warfare Group 11. Murr, who has served as Fleet Logistics Support Wing Deputy Surgeon, is a three-time recipient of the prestigious Flight Surgeon of the Year Award (honored in 2011, 2020, and 2022).
It’s dedicated professionals like Captain Murr who prove that the real pulse of the Cleveland National Airshow doesn’t just live at 15,000 feet—it thrives on the hot asphalt through hours of discipline, check-lists, and community pride. All weekend long, Cleveland 13 will be right beside these aircraft, bringing you the crew debriefs, the mechanic walk-throughs, and the human conversations you won’t see from the grandstands. Whether you’re watching the skies from a boat on the water, sitting along the shore at Voinovich Park, or following along with us from home, we’ll make sure you have the best seat on the tarmac.
