Sherwin-Williams Hosts Topping-Off Ceremony at its New Global Headquarters

CLEVELAND, OH - The Sherwin-Williams Company celebrated a momentous occasion on December 4th with the topping-off ceremony of its new global headquarters in downtown Cleveland. This significant milestone marks the completion of the structural work on the project, which began with a groundbreaking ceremony in January 2022.

The topping-off ceremony, a time-honored tradition in the construction industry, signifies the successful conclusion of the steelwork by placing the final steel beam. The ceremony also serves as a tribute to the construction crew for their remarkable achievements. Adorned with an American flag and an evergreen tree, the beam symbolizes good luck for future occupants, growth in harmony with the environment, and a job well done. Over 600 individuals, including construction workers, supervisors, project architects, engineers, and designers, as well as local elected officials, Sherwin-Williams leaders, and the Building Our Future project team, signed the beam.

John G. Morikis, Sherwin-Williams Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, expressed his excitement about the progress made on the new global headquarters, stating, "It is exciting to see the significant progress being made on our new global headquarters, and we are so proud to be investing in the future of our Company and the future of the region, which has been our home since 1866."

Heidi G. Petz, Sherwin-Williams President and Chief Operating Officer, extended her gratitude to the construction crew for their dedication to safety and the successful completion of this important milestone. She emphasized that the new state-of-the-art workplace will foster creativity and innovation, benefitting customers and attracting and retaining talent.

The new global headquarters, part of Sherwin-Williams' Building Our Future project, spans approximately 1,000,000 square feet and will serve as the gateway to Public Square. It consists of a two-story pavilion, a 36-story tower, and a multi-level parking garage. Once open, the headquarters will accommodate approximately 4,000 Sherwin-Williams employees.

The topping-off ceremony featured additional remarks from Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb and Tom Broad, Chief Executive Officer at Midwest Steel, the female-owned firm responsible for providing the structural steel for the project. After the remarks, Sherwin-Williams leaders and elected officials signed the beam before it was raised into its final position by a crane.

Mayor Bibb expressed his honor to be part of the Building Our Future project, recognizing the hard work and dedication of the construction crew in transforming the city skyline and strengthening Cleveland's economic future. He commended all the firms involved for their safe and progressive contributions to making this milestone a reality.

The Building Our Future project includes not only the new global headquarters but also the new Global Technology Center in Brecksville, which will cover approximately 600,000 square feet. With a minimum investment of $860 million in construction costs, Sherwin-Williams plans to open both facilities by the end of 2024.

Ms. Petz highlighted Sherwin-Williams' commitment to the community, stating, "We've been committed to this community for more than 157 years with a focus on creating opportunities for all." She expressed pride in the strategic collaboration with city, county, and state leaders, as well as local organizations, which has resulted in workforce opportunities for many, including minority-owned, female-owned, and small businesses.

As of November 2023, contracts worth $283 million have been awarded to over 100 certified firms, surpassing the project's minimum supplier requirement of $258 million.
