SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — A junior from the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools traded the track for a patrol car this week to explore a future in law enforcement. Paige Walker, a student at Brush High School, recently reached out to her school resource officer to request a ride-along experience following a successful weekend in which she earned four medals in track and field. The department paired Walker with Sgt. Steve Wilson, an officer with 24 years of experience on the force. Wilson's career in South Euclid has been extensive, including roles as a field training officer and a member of the EDGE SWAT team, a regional task force that serves several Cleveland suburbs. In 2015, Wilson was recognized with the Distinguished Law Enforcement Valor Award, making him a seasoned mentor for a student considering the profession. Walker told officers she has a specific interest in eventually becoming a K-9 handler. To give her a closer look at that career path, the department coordinated a meeting with Officer Amy Barnett and her K-9 partner, Sonic, from the Lyndhurst Police Department. This cross-jurisdictional meeting allowed Walker to see the bonding and technical work required between a handler and a working dog. It is a priority for the South Euclid Police Department to maintain these types of partnerships with the local school district. According to the South Euclid police record, these ride-along opportunities are designed to provide students with firsthand insight into the daily responsibilities of the officers serving their community. The department often facilitates these requests for students who show a serious interest in public service or criminal justice. Residents or students interested in learning more about the ride-along program or other community outreach initiatives can contact the South Euclid Police Department at 216-381-1234. -------------------- At Cleveland 13 News, we strive to provide accurate, up-to-date, and reliable reporting.
