OREM, Utah - Charlie Kirk, founder and president of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck during a live speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The incident occurred around noon, approximately 20 minutes into his “American Comeback Tour” presentation. Witnesses reported a single gunshot fired from a nearby building, striking Kirk as he stood under a tent branded with slogans “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.”
Kirk, 31, is a prominent conservative commentator and political activist known for his outspoken views on college campuses and his alliance with former President Donald Trump. He founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at the age of 18 and has since built the organization into a powerful force in conservative politics, particularly among younger voters. He is also a frequent media presence, podcast host, and author of several books on conservative ideology.
Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who attended the event, described the gunfire as a “close shot” and criticized the security measures in place. “I never thought I’d see something like this in Utah,” he said. “This is supposed to be one of the safest places in the country.”
University officials immediately evacuated the campus, and police confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or motive, and no updates have been provided on Kirk’s medical condition.
Public figures from across the political spectrum responded swiftly. Then-President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” Vice President J.D. Vance echoed that message on X, stating, “Say a prayer for Charlie. He’s a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
FBI Director Kash Patel announced that federal agents are assisting in the investigation, noting that the agency is committed to ensuring justice. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said he was being regularly briefed and vowed accountability, emphasizing that “violence has no place in public life.” California Governor Gavin Newsom also condemned the shooting, calling it “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible.”
Senator Mike Lee urged the public to join him in prayer for Kirk and the university’s students, while Turning Point USA issued a brief statement through spokesperson Aubrey Laitsch: “We are confirming that he was shot and we are praying for Charlie.”
The shooting comes amid growing national concern over politically motivated violence, raising renewed questions about event security and free speech protections in an increasingly polarized climate.
Update: Charlie Kirk was confirmed deceased around 5pm (September 10, 2025)
