Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum to Showcase the Evolution of the American Truck in New Exhibit

CLEVELAND, OH — The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum is preparing to showcase the massive impact of the trucking industry on American life and commerce. Starting May 8, 2026, the museum will debut "Keep On Truckin': Rise of the Great American Truck" at its headquarters within the Cleveland History Center in University Circle. This exhibition is not just a display of old vehicles. It is a featured stop on the America 250-Ohio Transportation Trail. The project is part of the statewide "Trails & Tales" initiative, which marks the 250th anniversary of the United States by highlighting the people and machines that moved the nation forward. The story begins in the late 19th century, when "horseless carriages" first underwent modifications to haul commercial goods. These early trucks were strictly utilitarian, designed to be used until they fell apart and then discarded. Because preservation was rarely a priority for business owners at the time, the surviving examples featured in this exhibit represent a rare look at the mechanical foundations of the modern world. Visitors will see a clear evolution from those spartan motorized wagons to the high-tech, luxury pickups that dominate today's automotive market. According to the Western Reserve Historical Society, the display will combine rare selections from the Crawford's permanent collection with specific vehicles brought in on loan. Cleveland's industrial legacy sits at the heart of the narrative. The White Motor Corp., which once operated a massive manufacturing complex on East 79th Street, served as a global leader in the trucking industry for decades. The company's contributions were essential to the development of commercial trucking, helping cement Cleveland's reputation as a powerhouse of American innovation. The exhibit explores how these long-haul vehicles sustain the current economy while also examining how the truck transitioned into a cultural staple for families and personal use. The Western Reserve Historical Society has been a fixture in Northeast Ohio since 1867 and currently operates as a Smithsonian Affiliate. In March 2025, the organization earned accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, which is considered the gold standard for museum excellence. This new exhibition is supported in part by residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. "Keep On Truckin': Rise of the Great American Truck" is scheduled to run through October 2026. Admission to the exhibit is included with general admission to the Cleveland History Center.
