Gunfire Leaves 20‑Year‑Old Dead at Busy Painesville Intersection

PAINESVILLE, OH — On Saturday, June 7, 2025, at approximately 7:59 p.m., the Painesville Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at the intersection of North State Street and Rockwood Drive in Painesville, a busy area near several public events, including a local block party.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 20‑year‑old male in the driver’s seat of a vehicle stopped in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Painesville Police Department identified the victim as Wyllyam James Sheffey Jr., of Ashtabula. At the time of this report, that identity has not yet been independently confirmed by the Lake County Coroner or other official sources outside the police department.
Authorities described the shooting as a targeted incident. No suspects have been identified or arrested. Detectives are actively processing a large volume of evidence and interviewing witnesses. The intersection remained closed for several hours as the investigation continued.
Emergency personnel from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Painesville City Fire Department assisted at the scene. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation was also present to gather forensic evidence.
Witnesses reported hearing numerous gunshots, though law enforcement has not confirmed the number of rounds fired. Officials clarified that there is no known connection between the shooting and the nearby block party.
