SANDUSKY, Ohio — Heavy rain transformed parts of Cedar Point into shallow pools on Monday, July 28, as severe storms swept through Sandusky, Ohio. The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued a flash flood warning at 5:02 p.m. for Erie County, with as much as 3 inches of rain already recorded and an additional 2 inches expected. Social media posts showed children playing in ankle-deep water near the main entrance and along walkways inside the park.
“There were a few areas of the peninsula with higher levels of water due to the rain, but they tend to recede shortly after storms,” a Cedar Point spokesperson told Cleveland's Fox 8 News. By late evening, drainage systems were clearing much of the standing water, and no major damage or injuries were reported.
Videos circulating online captured guests splashing through the puddles and actually swimming in the pools of water flowing through the park, which drew mixed reactions. One person commented, “Forget the haters. This is EPIC!!! Live in the moment.” Others echoed similar sentiments with another writing, “It’s kids being kids … lol,” and yet another, “Now that’s how you make the most of a bad situation.” Some visitors expressed concerns over the water quality. One Cedar Point fan posted, “All of the spit, bird poop, literally every nasty thing I can think of on that pavement!,” while another simply called it “Diabolical.”
Despite the online divide, several visitors saw the flooding as an unexpected memory-making moment.
By early Tuesday, Cedar Point had returned to normal operations, with the park noting that flooding after heavy storms is typically temporary and quickly resolved.
