Heinen's to Close Iconic Downtown Cleveland Supermarket For Good This July

Published: Jun 26, 2026 - 12:26 p.m.

CLEVELAND, OH — The downtown grocery landscape is facing a major shift as Heinen's prepares to exit its landmark location at the corner of East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue. After an eleven-year run in the historic Cleveland Trust Company Building, the family-owned chain announced it will officially close the store on July 31, 2026. Jeff Heinen, the company's co-president, confirmed the decision follows years of operational adjustments that ultimately could not overcome the high overhead costs associated with the site. According to the company's official statement, the financial performance of the store did not meet the baseline requirements for long-term sustainability. The move marks a quiet end to a project that began with significant civic pride when the doors first opened on February 25, 2015. The grocery store breathed new life into an architectural masterpiece designed by George B. Post in 1907, featuring a massive rotunda and a spectacular Tiffany-style stained-glass dome. Before Heinen's moved in, the rotunda had been closed to the general public for more than twenty years following banking mergers in the early 1990s. The building even had a brush with Hollywood fame in 2012, serving as a primary filming location for Marvel's The Avengers, where it stood in for a New York City banking hall. The timing of the closure reflects broader economic changes within the city's urban core. When the Geis Companies acquired the complex in 2012 to launch the multi-million-dollar project known as The 9, urban planners believed a threshold of 20,000 residents was necessary to support a full-scale grocery store. Heinen's entered the market early to help drive that growth, but the post-pandemic shift toward remote and hybrid work models has cut deep into the store's weekday business. The lack of consistent foot traffic from office workers who once frequented the deli and prepared food sections created a gap that residential growth could not fill. Management tried to save the location by downsizing in late 2024, a move that saw the permanent closure of the second-floor mezzanine. This consolidation was intended to streamline logistics and reduce expenses, yet it was not enough to balance the books for the massive neo-classical space. While smaller shops like Constantino's Market continue to serve the neighborhood, the loss of Heinen's leaves the central business district without its only full-service supermarket. Corporate leadership has emphasized that no employees will lose their jobs because of this decision. All associates currently working at the downtown location will be offered positions at the company's eighteen other regional supermarkets across Northeast Ohio and Illinois. According to the company record, no other suburban storefronts within the Heinen's network are being considered for closure at this time. -------------------- At Cleveland 13 News, we strive to provide accurate, up-to-date, and reliable reporting.
