Manhattan Shooter Kills Four in Park Avenue Office Tower Mass Shooting Before Turning Gun on Himself

MANHATTAN, NY — Police are investigating the motive behind a deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan that left four people dead and one seriously injured on Monday evening, marking the deadliest gun attack in New York City in 25 years. The incident occurred inside 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story office tower housing corporate offices for the National Football League and investment firm Blackstone. Authorities identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, who fatally shot himself after the rampage.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed Tuesday that Tamura intended to target the NFL headquarters but took the wrong elevator, ending up on the 33rd floor occupied by Rudin Management. “From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator bank up to the NFL headquarters,” Adams said in an interview with CBS Mornings. “Instead, it took him to Rudin Management, and that is where he carried out additional shootings and took the lives of additional employees.”

Among the victims was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh who was working off-duty security in the building. Islam, a four-year veteran of the force, leaves behind two young sons, with his wife expecting their third child. Wesley LePatner, a senior managing director at Blackstone, was also killed. Blackstone issued a statement calling LePatner “brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected,” adding, “Our prayers are with her husband, children and family.”

Authorities said Tamura carried an M4-style assault rifle. A suicide note found in his pocket alleged he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition linked to repeated head trauma. He reportedly expressed grievances with the NFL, writing that “you can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you,” and requested that his brain be studied. Law enforcement sources confirmed Tamura had a documented mental health history but no significant criminal record.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday called on Congress to pass a nationwide assault weapons ban. “New York has some of the strongest gun laws in the nation. We banned assault weapons. We strengthened our Red Flag Law. We closed dangerous loopholes. But our laws only go so far when an AR-15 can be obtained in a state with weak gun laws and brought into New York to commit mass murder,” Hochul said. “The time to act is now. The American people are tired of thoughts and prayers. They deserve action.”

President Donald Trump, briefed on the shooting, offered condolences on Truth Social, stating, “I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence. My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

A makeshift memorial with flowers and messages, including a balloon reading “Love one another,” appeared Tuesday morning outside 345 Park Avenue. NYPD officers saluted Islam’s body during a solemn transfer at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center late Monday night.

The investigation is ongoing, with the FBI assisting local authorities. NYPD officials confirmed that the surviving victim, an NFL employee, remains hospitalized in stable condition.
