Medina Citizens Rally and Hold Candlelight Vigil to Protest Due Process Violations

MEDINA, OH — On Tuesday, June 17, concerned citizens from multiple counties will gather at Medina’s Public Square to hold a rally and candlelight vigil protesting the detainment and deportation of immigrants and U.S. citizens without due process. The event, organized by local activists, will run from 7 to 9 p.m., with the rally from 7 to 8 p.m. and the vigil from 8 to 9 p.m.

“We protest the systematic dehumanization of immigrants, the lawless kidnapping and detainment of immigrants and U.S. citizens, and the illegal deportation of immigrants to places known for abusing human rights, such as the CECOT, the notorious mega-prison in El Salvador,” organizers stated in a release.

Organizers cite several actions by former President Trump and his administration as evidence of an authoritarian tilt. They refer to Trump’s April 14 remarks suggesting U.S. citizens could be sent to CECOT, his May 4 statement expressing uncertainty about upholding the Constitution, and Stephen Miller’s May 9 assertion that the administration was “actively looking at” suspending habeas corpus for all U.S. residents.

Legal experts and media outlets have weighed in on the habeas corpus claims. Analysts explain that the administration has said it is considering suspending habeas corpus, adding that it is a constitutional right that can be suspended only by Congress during rebellion or invasion. Multiple White House officials have floated the idea, but legal consensus maintains that only Congress holds that authority. Some legal experts have called Miller’s position factually and legally flawed, citing expert criticism that the proposal would violate constitutional law.

Supporters of the administration point to a sharp rise in immigration-related protests and recent legal efforts. The Department of Justice has directed U.S. attorneys to prioritize and publicize prosecutions tied to protests, stating that it supports peaceful demonstrations but will act firmly against unlawful violence and property damage. Trump has warned that protests in Los Angeles could be the first of many and said law enforcement would be met with equal or greater force.

“This is an authoritarian takeover,” organizers said. “This is a national emergency. The time for visible opposition is now.” The rally invites participants to bring signs, flags, instruments and noisemakers, while the candlelight vigil will provide candles and feature poems or statements honoring those detained without due process. Donations for the ACLU will also be accepted.

Since Trump’s inauguration, hundreds of migrants and U.S. citizens have reportedly been arrested, detained and deported without judicial review. Organizers stressed that because Congress has remained silent, citizens must speak for themselves.
