Northeast Ohio Offers Free Summer Activities for a Classic ‘90s Feel

NORTHEAST OHIO — Families looking to provide children with an unplugged, outdoor summer experience have access to numerous free activities across Northeast Ohio. Local zoos, parks, libraries and businesses are offering programs designed to help kids stay active and create memories without the expense of major attractions. Animal lovers can visit two area zoos for free on select days. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo offers free admission on Mondays for residents of Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township, though the offer is not valid on major holidays. Proof of residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill, is required. In Akron, the Akron Zoo will host Summit County Community Days in September, providing free admission for county residents on designated dates. Several programs are also encouraging summer reading with rewards. Malley's Chocolates is running its "Read Your Way to a Sundae" program, where children up to age 18 can earn a free chocolate bar after four hours of reading and a free ice cream sundae after eight hours. Additionally, the Cleveland Public Library, Cuyahoga County Public Library and Akron-Summit County Public Library systems all have summer reading programs that feature prize vouchers and free events, including sessions where children can read to therapy animals. To beat the summer heat, a number of free, local splash pads are open to the public. Notable locations include the splash pad at Lakewood Park, which offers views of Lake Erie and the Cleveland skyline from the Solstice Steps. In downtown Cleveland, Fort Huntington Park has a splash pad surrounded by green space, while Brainard Park in Lyndhurst features a sprayground with dumping buckets and ground sprayers. For outdoor exploration, the region's park systems provide a range of free options. The Rocky River Nature Center in North Olmsted includes indoor exhibits and outdoor hiking trails. In Beachwood, Preston's H.O.P.E. is a 60,000-square-foot accessible playground designed as a small village. The F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm in Akron features a visitors center, a suspension bridge and nature paths across its 110 acres. In Westlake, Northeast Ohio Parent Magazine is hosting a series of free, themed summer events at Crocker Park.
