Shaker Heights Native Molly Shannon Honored with Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

HOLLYWOOD, CA. – Shaker Heights native Molly Shannon was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on June 22, cementing her legacy in the entertainment industry. The actress and comedian received the 2,850th star in the television category during a ceremony attended by fans and collaborators at 6765 Hollywood Boulevard.

The event featured remarks from fellow “Saturday Night Live” alumnus Will Ferrell and actress Connie Britton, with journalist Kit Hoover serving as the master of ceremonies. The honor recognized a career that has spanned decades, but its origins are rooted in a difficult Northeast Ohio childhood that shaped Shannon’s resilience and comedic style.

Born in 1964, Shannon’s life was irrevocably altered at age four. In June 1969, her family was involved in a single-vehicle accident while returning to Shaker Heights. According to police reports, the car, driven by her father James Francis Shannon, sideswiped another vehicle before striking a utility pole. The crash killed her mother, Mary Margaret Keating Shannon, her three-year-old sister, Katie, and a cousin. Shannon survived with a broken arm.

Raised by her father as a single parent, Shannon and her older sister, Mary, grew up in an unconventional home. Her father, a former sales manager, encouraged an atmosphere of improvisation and pranks, which helped his daughter channel grief into a fearless, physical approach to comedy.

Shannon found a creative outlet in local theater, performing with the Heights Youth Theatre beginning in elementary school and taking on roles such as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” She attended St. Dominic School and later graduated from the Hawken School in Gates Mills in 1983. It was during her time in Catholic school that she developed the mannerisms for her signature character, Mary Katherine Gallagher, transforming a personal childhood anxiety into a comedic tool.

After graduating from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1987, Shannon pursued acting, landing her breakthrough role in February 1995 as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” Over six seasons, she became known for characters like Sally O'Malley and cited Cleveland native Gilda Radner as a key influence.

Shannon’s career has since expanded to include critically acclaimed dramatic roles. Her star is located on the north side of the street near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and North Highland Avenue.
