The Best Affordable Family Trip You Haven’t Taken Yet This Summer is in Lansing

LANSING, Michigan — Soaking up the last bit of summer with a family getaway doesn’t have to be expensive or far from home. Lansing, Michigan offers a wide range of fun, educational, and budget-friendly activities that make it the ideal destination for a weekend trip. From historic sites to hands-on museums, local sports, and delicious dining, this city provides something for everyone.

The trip began on a Friday afternoon with a guided tour of the Michigan State Capitol Building. The final tour starts at 4 p.m., making it a great way to kick off the weekend with a free educational experience. After checking in at the Homewood Suites in Eastwood Towne Center, dinner options were plentiful, with nearby casual sit-down and quick-service restaurants to choose from.

Later that evening, the MSU Abrams Planetarium provided an affordable and engaging experience for the entire family. The show was both informative and entertaining, with ticket prices under $6, making it a perfect evening activity that didn’t strain the budget.

Saturday started with breakfast at the hotel before heading to the Impression 5 Science Center, a hands-on museum filled with interactive exhibits that are especially appealing to younger children. With an Experience Pass, admission was discounted for the whole family. Kids explored everything from bubble play large enough to step inside to launching paper airplanes and building bottle rockets, making it a memorable and educational stop.

After a morning of discovery, the Lansing River Trail and Planet Walk offered a scenic and free outdoor experience. For lunch, downtown options like Lansing Brewing Co. or Nuthouse Sports Grill served hearty meals that satisfied both kids and adults.

The afternoon offered two activity routes. For outdoor enthusiasts, kayaking with River Town Adventures gave families the chance to enjoy Lansing’s waterways. Tandem and single kayaks were available by the hour, and the experience was a peaceful way to enjoy nature. Alternatively, indoor excitement awaited at Zap Zone XL, which was especially popular with preteens and teens. With a mix of laser tag, bumper cars, go-karts, bowling, and arcade games, it was easy to spend the entire afternoon indoors while still being active and entertained.

In the evening, the Lansing Lugnuts game at Jackson Field brought the family together for classic ballpark fun. Tickets were already covered, and ballpark food made dinner easy and enjoyable.

Sunday began with brunch at HopCat in East Lansing, where the adults enjoyed hearty meals and kids ate free; a welcome bonus. From there, visits to the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum and the MSU Horticulture Gardens & 4-H Children’s Garden offered more free fun. Both locations provided a peaceful environment with opportunities for learning and exploration. A final treat came with a stop at the MSU Dairy Store for some of the best ice cream in the area. Single scoops were just $4, making it a sweet and simple way to wrap up the trip.

For those with extra time, the Michigan History Museum opens for free on Sundays in the afternoon, offering one more enriching stop before heading home.

Lansing proves that a family trip can be fun, educational, and affordable. From science centers and planetariums to outdoor adventures and local flavors, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the final days of summer without overspending.
