WASHINGTON D.C. — President Donald Trump announced a significant shift in his administration’s pursuit of Greenland on Wednesday, moving away from demands for outright ownership toward what he described as a "framework deal." The announcement came via social media following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. As part of this change in direction, the White House confirmed it won’t be imposing the tariffs that were originally scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. This move follows a Tuesday speech at the Davos conference where the President’s tone was notably more aggressive. During those remarks, he criticized NATO and Danish officials as ungrateful, suggesting the United States should own the island rather than lease it for military use.
That rhetoric preceded a sharp drop in the U.S. stock market: a development the President specifically referenced. By Wednesday morning, the EU Parliament had also moved to block the finalization of a trade deal with the United States, citing the Greenland dispute as a primary factor. In his latest update, the President focused on a future arrangement for the entire Arctic region. He mentioned that discussions are continuing regarding the "Golden Dome" as it pertains to Greenland, though he didn’t provide specific details on what that entails. While the President touted the productivity of his meeting with Rutte, the NATO chief doesn’t have sovereign authority over Denmark or Greenland. It’s currently unclear if Danish leaders or Greenlandic officials were consulted on the new framework.
Internal critics and international observers have pointed out that the U.S. has maintained a presence on the island for decades. A 1951 treaty between the United States and Denmark already provides the American military with extensive access to Greenland. Despite this, the President characterized the new understanding as a historic step that would last infinitely. Additional information regarding the specific terms of the framework is expected as discussions with NATO progress.
