FDA Issues Urgent Recall for Broccoli Sold at Walmart Over Listeria Risk
WCTU CLEVELAND 13 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has elevated the recall of Marketside Broccoli Florets to a Class I status, the most serious level, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected 12-ounce bags, produced by Braga Fresh of Soledad, California, were originally recalled on Dec. 27, 2024, as a precaution. The upgraded classification underscores the risk of serious illness or death, particularly for vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

The recalled product bears a UPC code of 6 81131 32884 5, a best-by date of Dec. 10, 2024, and a lot code of BFFG327A6. The recall follows a random test of a bag sold in Texas, which confirmed the presence of Listeria. As of now, no illnesses have been reported.
The potentially contaminated broccoli was distributed to Walmart stores in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Since the best-by date has passed, the product is no longer being sold in stores. However, consumers who may still have the broccoli in their homes are urged to discard it immediately.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in pregnant women, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system, leading to headaches, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
The FDA advises anyone who may have consumed the product and is experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention immediately. Consumers with questions can contact Braga Fresh or Walmart for further assistance.
