Maggie Smith's Final Film, 'The Miracle Club', Now Streaming on Netflix

WCTU CLEVELAND 13 — Dame Maggie Smith's final film, The Miracle Club, is now available for streaming on Netflix in the UK and Ireland. The 2023 dramedy, directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan, follows a group of working-class women from Dublin who embark on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, each seeking personal miracles and reconciliation.

Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2023, the film received mixed to positive reviews upon its theatrical release in July of the same year. O'Sullivan highlighted Smith's departure from her well-known role in Downton Abbey, stating, "She's so un-Downton. Although [her] character does have a somewhat prickly and demanding nature… eventually we see a deeply vulnerable, humble and compassionate woman".

The Miracle Club features an ensemble cast including Laura Linney, Kathy Bates, Agnes O'Casey, Stephen Rea, and Mark O'Halloran. Set in the 1960s, the narrative centers on themes of friendship, faith, and personal growth as the characters navigate their journey to Lourdes.

The film marks Smith's final acting role before her passing in September 2024. In honor of her legacy, the upcoming Downton Abbey film, titled The Grand Finale, will include a tribute to her character, Violet Crawley. Executive producer Gareth Neame remarked, "The fact that Dame Maggie herself has now passed away since that time, I do think has given a real added poignancy to a story that we would have planned anyway".

The Miracle Club is currently streaming on Netflix in the USA, UK and Ireland.
