KENT, Ohio — At 18 years old, Kent native Ian Maynhart is preparing to walk 5.6 miles through the heart of Manhattan, not as a tourist but as a designer attempting to shatter a world record. The event, scheduled for June 28, aims to claim the title for the world's longest runway show by moving from the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art down to the Federal Reserve. According to event organizers on Meetup, the current Guinness World Record for a fashion show length stands at just one mile. Maynhart plans to quintuple that distance. For the young designer, who recently moved his brand operations to Cleveland, the ambitious trek is about more than just setting a benchmark in a record book. He says his clothes are meant to serve as symbols for larger social issues, with 20 percent of his revenue currently supporting the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The inspiration for his aesthetic did not come from the bright lights of New York but from the industrial roots of Northeast Ohio. Maynhart grew up near Kent State University, where he found beauty in brutalist architecture and the grit of urban decay. These surroundings, characterized by heavy concrete and weathered structures, continue to influence the silhouettes and textures of his collections. He experimented with his brand for a while before a viral video in April 2024 pushed him to commit to the industry full time. This shift led him to move to New York City only a week after his high school graduation. The transition was a lesson in scale. He traded a community where he was a known entity for the anonymity of one of the world's most competitive markets, yet he embraced the change as motivation. Rather than a traditional indoor venue, this show will utilize public sidewalks as a stage for dozens of models wearing matching designs. Maynhart believes that significant change only occurs when people move in masses, a philosophy he's applying to both his charity work and this public installation. If successful, the event would mark Maynhart's first runway show, which is a significant undertaking for a designer in the earliest stages of his career. The 5.6-mile route is scheduled to begin at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on June 28, with organizers documenting the attempt for official Guinness World Records verification. -------------------- At Cleveland 13 News, we strive to provide accurate, up-to-date, and reliable reporting.
