Rare Genetic Disorder Takes Center Stage at Playhouse Square in Critically Acclaimed Kimberly Akimbo

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Kimberly Akimbo, the most Tony Award-winning show of the season, is now playing at Playhouse Square in Cleveland through August 3. The Broadway musical follows Kimberly Levaco, a teenage girl with a rare, fictionalized genetic condition that causes her to age four times faster than normal, making her appear as if she's in her early 70s. As she approaches her 16th birthday, Kimberly finds herself navigating the turbulence of moving to a new town in suburban New Jersey, family dysfunction, her first crush, and even the threat of felony charges; all while chasing a sense of normalcy and happiness.

The musical is based on the play by David Lindsay-Abaire, who also wrote the book and lyrics for the production. With music by Jeanine Tesori, choreography by Danny Mefford, and direction by Tony-nominated Jessica Stone, the show has garnered five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The cast features three-time Tony nominee Carolee Carmello in the title role. Known for its mix of quirky humor and emotional depth, Kimberly Akimbo has been called a “howlingly funny heartbreaker of a show” by The New Yorker and “profoundly funny and heartbreaking” by the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

The production explores deep and relatable themes; mortality, the preciousness of time, self-discovery, and the complexities of family relationships. These topics are especially resonant for teens and anyone living with unique medical challenges. For those who can relate to Kimberly’s story, the musical offers a sense of visibility and shared experience.

As a teen who lives with hemihypertrophy, a rare genetic condition, this play touched my heart. I related to it in so many ways. Some days are harder than others navigating it, but it makes you a stronger person.

The musical does contain some strong language and sexual themes, so parents are encouraged to consider whether the content is appropriate for younger viewers. Still, Kimberly Akimbo is a compelling option for a teen night out or a family experience that sparks meaningful conversation.

Part of a national tour, the production will continue to cities such as Minneapolis and Greenville following its Cleveland run. Audiences can catch performances at Playhouse Square through August 3.
