Superman Soars into Cleveland as Fans Flock to Early Screening and Citywide Celebrations

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Tuesday evening, futuristic nostalgia and hometown pride converged at the Phoenix Theater as Cleveland and Superman fans gathered for an advance screening of Superman, set to hit theaters Friday, July 11. The Dolby Encore sound system makes you feel like you are flying with Superman. The film opened with sweeping shots of Cleveland landmarks and featured action-packed scenes that captivated family audiences.

In the days leading up to the film’s national release, Cleveland has embraced its role as the cinematic Metropolis. On Wednesday, July 9, the City Club of Cleveland hosted an outdoor conversation at Playhouse Square Plaza examining the city's starring role in the movie and its comic book heritage.

The festivities continue Saturday, July 12, with two major free events. Cleveland Public Library’s Main Library, 325 Superior Ave., will hold an all-day “Superman at the Library” celebration from noon to 8 p.m., featuring comic creators like Brian Michael Bendis, Sina Grace, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Andrew Aydin and Gene Luen Yang. Attendees can explore Superman memorabilia, attend workshops and signings, and participate in kid-friendly activities including crafts, games, face painting and a superhero-themed escape room.

Tower City Center, 230 W. Huron Rd., will host a family-friendly Superman Party from noon to 6 p.m. The Cinematic Symphony Orchestra will kick off the celebration with a performance of superhero movie scores. Throughout the day, comic book creators will engage the audience with Q&A sessions and drawing demonstrations, while guests enjoy cosplay contests, games and themed photo ops.

Meanwhile, fans can visit Carol and John’s Comic Book Shop in Kamm’s Plaza, 17462 Lorain Ave., from July 9 through July 16. The store is showcasing an 11-foot-tall recreation of the iconic Action Comics No. 1 cover, complete with a cardboard cutout car for interactive photos. Free Superman comics will be distributed during the event.
