Veterans Day Saluted Across the Country, Local Schools Honor Veterans with Songs and Special Guests

Updated: Nov 14

PARMA, OH — Across the United States, communities and leaders are honoring Veterans Day today with ceremonies, tributes, and educational events to recognize the contributions of American military veterans. The holiday, observed annually on November 11, commemorates the service and sacrifices of veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Originally established as Armistice Day in 1919 to honor the end of World War I, it became Veterans Day in 1954, expanding its purpose to honor veterans of all wars.

In Washington, D.C., President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, joined by their spouses, took part in a solemn tribute at Arlington National Cemetery. At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Biden laid a wreath as a mark of respect for those who have given their lives in service. The Tomb, a symbol of sacrifice and the unknown fallen, has been a focal point of Veterans Day ceremonies for decades. In a statement earlier, Biden praised the resilience and dedication of America’s veterans, remarking on their pivotal role in protecting the nation's freedoms and ideals.

The tributes were felt in communities across the nation, including at Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Parma, Ohio, part of the Parma City School District, where students took part in a patriotic ceremony. Children performed a medley of the official songs of each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the newest branch, the United States Space Force, which was officially established five years ago. The school invited local veterans as guests, who took the time to answer students' questions and share personal insights into military life. The event aimed to give students a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by veterans and the importance of military service.

"Our veterans are the pillars of our country," a parent of one of the students at Pleasant Valley Elementary remarked, observing the children's curiosity and respect during the interactions with the veterans.

Former President and current President-Elect Donald Trump also acknowledged Veterans Day on social media, posting a message on X (formerly Twitter) to commemorate the U.S. Marine Corps' 249th birthday. Trump shared a video montage originally posted by the U.S. Marines, adding his message, “HAPPY 249TH BIRTHDAY TO OUR GREAT U.S. MARINES!!!” The tribute honored the Marine Corps' storied history, established in 1775 as one of the nation’s oldest and most distinguished branches of the military.

Veterans Day serves not only as a moment of national reflection but as a reminder of the continuous sacrifices made by service members and their families. The presence of veterans at ceremonies and in classrooms this year underscores the importance of connecting younger generations with the legacy of military service and dedication. With ceremonies and commemorations nationwide, Americans of all ages are reminded of the courage and resilience of those who have served and continue to serve to safeguard the nation’s freedoms.
