Kings Island Announces Return of Phantom Theater With New Interactive Ride in 2026

Published: Apr 18, 2026 - 12:49 p.m.

MASON, Ohio — Kings Island will debut a reimagined version of a classic attraction with the grand opening of Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare on April 18, 2026. The new family-friendly dark ride invites guests into a story in which a lightning strike on the theater's opening night unleashes supernatural "ghost notes" from the Maestro's pipe organ. Riders are tasked with helping the head usher, No Legs Larry, save the show.

Guests will board continuously moving vehicles, called Enchanted Opera Boxes, for a five-minute journey through 26 detailed scenes. Each rider will be equipped with an interactive "spellbound flashlight" used to capture the mischievous ghost notes and return them to the organ. The attraction, developed by Sally Dark Rides, will feature state-of-the-art animatronics and multisensory effects, such as wind and the sound of shattering mirrors. While introducing new characters like Arpeggio, the Maestro's cat, the ride also marks the return of fan favorites, including the Maestro, Hilda Bovine, Houdelini, and the Great Garbanzo.

For many visitors, the ride brings back a piece of the park's history. The original Phantom Theater operated from 1992 to 2002. Since its closure, the building has housed other attractions, including Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle and, most recently, Boo Blasters on Boo Hill. Located at the entrance of Planet Snoopy, the indoor, air-conditioned ride is designed for families. Guests must be at least 36 inches tall to ride with a supervising companion or 48 inches tall to ride alone. -------------------- At Cleveland 13 News, we strive to provide accurate, up-to-date, and reliable reporting.
