LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Ethlete Lab Academy (ELA), a new gaming lounge and educational hub, opened its doors on March 3 at 14414 Detroit Ave., aiming to provide a safe and inclusive environment for youth aged 8 to 18. The facility combines state-of-the-art gaming stations with STEM-focused classes, including coding, game design, and cybersecurity.
“We believe that gaming is more than just entertainment. It’s a gateway to innovation, collaboration, and limitless potential,” said Michael Newton, co-founder and CEO of ELA, in an interview with the Lakewood Observer.
Newton, who formerly served as head coach of the Golden State Warriors' NBA 2K League affiliate, emphasized the academy's mission to bridge the gap between gaming culture and education.
The 2,500-square-foot space features 20 high-performance PCs, console gaming areas, VR stations, and soundproof streaming pods. A dedicated classroom hosts interactive 50-minute sessions on various tech topics, fostering creativity and critical thinking among participants. The lounge also includes a café area where patrons can bring outside food and socialize.
ELA offers flexible membership options and day passes, catering to both casual gamers and those seeking structured learning experiences. The academy also provides opportunities for internships and community engagement, collaborating with local schools and organizations.
“We want to provide a safe space for kids where they’re able to grow and they’re able to connect with their peers,” Newton told WKYC 3 News.
ELA's commitment to inclusivity and education positions it as a unique addition to Lakewood's community resources.
