Veterans to March Through Cleveland in Silkies for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention

CLEVELAND, Ohio — On Saturday, July 19, Cleveland will host its own Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike, a non-athletic, camaraderie-focused event designed to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide. The hike kicks off at 9 a.m. at 1201 N. Marginal Road, with check-in from 8 to 9 a.m. and is expected to last until 5 p.m.

The Silkies Hike, open exclusively to veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and National Guard members, promotes healing through humor, community, and shared experience. Participants will trek roughly 22 kilometers through Cleveland at a leisurely pace, with regular stops for socializing, snacks, and games.

“These events create a network of enduring support by communicating the message: ‘Your existence matters,’” said organizers. The emphasis is on openness, inclusivity, and connection, with veterans encouraged to share their stories or simply enjoy the company of fellow service members.

Across the country, similar events have earned strong support. Gunnar Edwards, who attended the Des Moines hike on July 12, wrote on Facebook, “If you're a veteran I highly encourage you to check out one of these events in a city near you.” He added, “Well worth the trip and new tan lines.”

In Galveston, Texas, the 10th annual hike occurred recently and one attendee, Mark Metzger III, took to social media to share his passion for the annual event with high spirits and a call to action. “There will be pain! There will be horror! TOGETHER WE WILL STOP VETERAN SUICIDE!!!” he posted online, rallying fellow participants as they began their march.

Back in Cleveland, the event will maintain strict policies to ensure safety and respect. Weapons of any kind, open containers, and public intoxication are prohibited. Only service animals trained to perform specific tasks related to a disability are allowed. Civilian guests, minors, and pets are not permitted.

This is not a race. Hikers can wear military packs or tactical vests, or simply show up in Silkies or comfortable shorts. The event stresses unity and support over physical exertion.

The event is coordinated by Robert Schwenk, who can be reached at cleveland@irreverentwarriors.com or 440-231-2980. Donations can be made through August 17 at www.irreverentwarriors.com/donate, benefiting Irreverent Warriors, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The organization is backed by national sponsors including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Rip It energy drinks.

With a presence in cities across the United States, Irreverent Warriors continues to grow its reach and impact. The organization urges veterans to connect with local chapters and explore upcoming hikes via their website.

“Our mission may have changed, but we still have each other’s backs,” the group affirms, highlighting its ongoing efforts to support those who have served.
