CLEVELAND, OH – Darren Hayes of Florida has embarked on a 5,500-mile journey around The Great Loop on a pontoon boat, aiming to raise national awareness and support for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Known as the Makin Wake movement, Hayes’ expedition reached Cleveland on Thursday, July 17, marking day 35 of his four-month trip.
“This isn’t about boating — it’s about hope,” Hayes said. “Every mile is for the families going through the toughest times of their lives. I want them to know they’re not alone.”
Hayes’ route spans more than 20 states and thousands of waterways, with stops in cities and towns to engage local supporters, share stories of families helped by Ronald McDonald House Charities, and highlight the importance of the organization’s mission. He is documenting his trip across social media, offering real-time updates and personal stories of those impacted by RMHC.
Recently, Hayes honored a young girl named Birdie Rey, who received lifesaving treatment through Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Riley Hospital for Children, by naming his pontoon “Birdie Rey.” The story of Birdie Rey reflects the mission that fuels Makin Wake’s journey to support families whose children are undergoing critical medical care.
The Makin Wake expedition began on June 10 in Tierra Verde, Florida, and Hayes expects to complete the route in approximately four months. This is not Hayes’ first charitable endeavor; he has completed two previous cross-country missions supporting the same cause.
Hayes encourages families who have been helped by Ronald McDonald House Charities to share their experiences by contacting him at wearemakinwake@gmail.com or through Facebook at @makin.wake.
