Active Shooter Drill at Cleveland Clinic Akron General

Updated: Apr 11

AKRON, OH (WCTU) - Cleveland Clinic Akron General successfully completed an Active Shooter Practice Exercise on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. The drill took place from 11:30 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m., utilizing the space of the former Emergency Department on the first floor of the main hospital building in Akron, Ohio.

The exercise simulated a scenario of an active shooter within the hospital to enhance emergency preparedness. Participants in the drill experienced loud noises replicating gunfire and witnessed scenes of uniformed law enforcement officers in action as part of the simulation. Actors were involved, portraying patients and visitors, some of whom appeared to carry weapons or exhibit simulated injuries.

Cleveland Clinic Akron General conducted this drill as a proactive measure to ensure the hospital is well-prepared for any potential real-life emergencies. The exercise was designed to test and improve the coordination and response strategies of hospital staff and emergency services in a controlled environment.

The hospital ensured there was no disruption to patient care throughout the duration of the drill. Extensive efforts were made to inform patients, visitors, and the local community about the exercise in advance to prevent any unnecessary alarm. This drill is part of the hospital's commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for both patients and staff.

Given the increase in public shootings nationwide, such preparedness measures are becoming increasingly essential. Cleveland Clinic Akron General's initiative to conduct this drill is reflective of a broader trend among institutions to prioritize emergency readiness and response capabilities.

Following the drill, the hospital worked closely with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies to review the effectiveness of the exercise and to make any necessary adjustments to their emergency preparedness plans, further bolstering the hospital's readiness for any potential emergency situations.
