Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer That Has Spread to Bones

WCTU - Former President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement released by his personal office on Sunday.

The diagnosis followed a medical evaluation prompted by increasing urinary symptoms. A prostate nodule was identified, and subsequent testing confirmed the presence of cancer characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating a highly aggressive form of the disease.

"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management," the statement noted. Biden and his family are currently consulting with his medical team to explore treatment options.

Biden, who served as the 46th president of the United States, left office in January 2025. During his presidency, he prioritized cancer research, notably relaunching the "Cancer Moonshot" initiative in 2022 with the goal of halving the cancer death rate over 25 years.

This recent diagnosis adds to Biden's personal history with cancer; in 2023, he had a cancerous skin lesion removed from his chest. Additionally, his son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015, an event that deeply influenced the former president's commitment to cancer research.

Prostate cancer is among the most common cancers affecting men, particularly those over the age of 65. While many cases are slow-growing, aggressive forms like Biden's can spread rapidly and require prompt and intensive treatment.

Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his physicians. He is spending the weekend at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Gleason score, which ranges from 6 to 10, assesses the aggressiveness of prostate cancer based on the microscopic appearance of cancer cells. A score of 9 indicates a highly aggressive form of the disease. Hormone-sensitive cancers can often be managed effectively through hormone therapy, which aims to reduce or block the production of hormones that fuel cancer growth.

Biden's health has been a topic of public discussion, especially during and after his presidency. In February 2024, he underwent a physical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, reported no new health concerns and deemed him "fit for duty." However, questions about his age and cognitive health persisted, particularly after a debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024 that drew criticism.

In a May 2025 appearance on ABC's "The View," Biden addressed concerns about his cognitive abilities, stating, "They are wrong. There is nothing to sustain that."

Community responses to the announcement of Joe Biden’s cancer diagnosis have been mixed, reflecting a range of political and personal sentiments. Some commenters expressed sympathy and offered prayers for his recovery, recognizing his decades of public service and commending his leadership during difficult times. Others, while critical of his presidency, emphasized the importance of compassion and humanity, with one noting, “regardless of how I feel about him as a president he is still a human.” There were also voices questioning the timing and transparency of the diagnosis, pointing to concerns over whether the condition had been concealed during his time in office. A few responses were starkly critical, invoking partisan views and moral judgments, while others cautioned against politicizing a serious health issue and called for respectful discourse.

Biden has a personal history with cancer; his son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015. This loss influenced Biden's commitment to cancer research, leading to initiatives like the "Cancer Moonshot," aimed at accelerating cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment efforts.
