WCTU CLEVELAND 13 — HBO has officially unveiled the young actors who will lead its upcoming Harry Potter television series, marking a significant moment for the beloved franchise. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have been selected to portray Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively, following a global casting call that attracted more than 30,000 hopefuls.

"The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen," said showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer Mark Mylod in a joint statement. "We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there."
McLaughlin, a Scottish actor, has upcoming roles in the Sky comedy film "Grow" and the BBC action-adventure series "Gifted." Stanton previously starred as Matilda in "Matilda: The Musical" in London's West End. The series marks Stout’s first major screen role.
The series, announced by HBO Max in 2023, is described as a "faithful adaptation" of J.K. Rowling's seven-book saga, with each season dedicated to one book. Rowling will serve as an executive producer. Filming is set to begin this summer at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, UK, with the first season likely to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
Veteran actor John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore. Additional cast includes Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
The casting decisions have drawn intense fan interest, with Lithgow even recounting that he was approached by fans at airports before his role was confirmed. "It's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid. But I'm very excited," he told ScreenRant.
With its decade-long plan and a cast blending newcomers with seasoned talent, HBO’s Harry Potter series aims to delve deeper into the narrative and characters than the original films allowed. While no original cast members have been confirmed to return, fans continue to speculate about potential cameos.
