AVON, OH — Cleveland Clinic has announced a $340 million expansion project that will nearly double the size of its Avon Hospital campus to meet surging demand for health care on the west side of Greater Cleveland. The project, scheduled to begin in 2026 and conclude in 2028, includes a new inpatient bed tower, expanded emergency and surgical services, and more lab and imaging capabilities.
“Our region is continuously evolving, and through Cleveland Clinic’s submarket approach, we can adapt to serve patients’ needs as they change,” said Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Tom Mihaljevic in a June 25 statement.
Opened in 2016, Avon Hospital currently operates with 126 beds across five stories. Since 2017, the hospital has seen more than a 40 percent increase in surgeries and admissions, along with a nearly 75 percent rise in imaging services, according to Cleveland Clinic officials. The Avon site has become home to one of the busiest labs in the Clinic’s network and has outpaced initial expectations, driving the need for additional space and capacity.
The expanded facility will include a larger emergency department, new operating rooms, increased inpatient space, and enhanced diagnostic resources. Additionally, the Richard E. Jacobs Family Health Center, which shares the 107-acre campus, will add approximately 90 exam rooms and expand cancer services, including radiation oncology. That center, opened in 2011, currently offers outpatient surgery, chemotherapy infusion, imaging, and physical therapy.
“This initiative will increase our ability to bring world-class care to this region,” said Jorge Guzman, president of Cleveland Clinic’s Northeast Ohio Market. “The communities in Lorain County have been growing quickly, and we want to ensure patients have access to the care they need close to home.”
The expansion plan also includes a new parking garage to accommodate growing patient and staff volumes. The exact size and location of the garage have yet to be determined, pending final site review with the City of Avon. No additional land will be required, according to property records from Lorain County.
Neil Smith, president of the Clinic’s West Submarket, emphasized that the Avon project is part of a larger $600 million investment in the region, which includes planned construction at Fairview Hospital in Cleveland. That site is expected to see the addition of a new cancer center, medical office building, and parking structure, with construction anticipated to begin later this year.
“This expansion is one example of how we’re committed to supporting our west side communities,” Smith said. “Together with important construction and initiatives taking place at Fairview Hospital, we will be well-positioned to provide comprehensive, quality care for years to come in this area.”
The Avon development represents a shift in Cleveland Clinic’s strategy to decentralize care and strengthen regional access. Mihaljevic reiterated this on LinkedIn, stating, “This investment allows us to continue adapting to the evolving health care needs of our communities, bringing care closer to where people live and work.”
The Avon campus also houses the Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital–Avon, which offers specialized post-acute care and nursing support. With the current expansion, the campus is poised to become one of the Clinic’s most comprehensive care hubs outside of its main campus in Cleveland.
The announcement comes nearly a decade after the controversial closure of Lakewood Hospital in 2016, with its services largely transferred to Avon. The Lakewood site was demolished in 2019 and awaits redevelopment. City officials say a $119 million mixed-use development plan is still on track to break ground in the third quarter of 2025.
